The only thing you left out was the fact that Maryland lost its rival UVA to VT and also lost(along with every team in the conference) 3 home and away basketball series when the conference raided the Big East years ago. It killed the ACC and the Big East at the same time. I, as a Maryland grad was shocked at the announcement. However, as time goes on, it may prove to be the right decision. Also, being honest, how many programs in the ACC could refuse an offer from the Big 10?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7193007137551439191.post-22155127406288460772012-11-21T01:01:06.543-05:002012-11-21T01:01:06.543-05:00You know it's bad when someone says "coll...You know it's bad when someone says "college football is too money-grubbing for my tastes, I might just watch the NFL instead."Brendanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10506945153264825303noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7193007137551439191.post-77820829561329970262012-11-21T00:02:06.473-05:002012-11-21T00:02:06.473-05:00I just stumbled upon your blog and really enjoyed ...I just stumbled upon your blog and really enjoyed reading about the UMD fiasco. As an FSU 07 grad, I really only know the ACC as a conference home. I went up and down the coast watching the Bowden sunset seasons (painful) as well as ACC basketball and baseball games. This whole process is nauseating. Money makes the world go round but can't we have some sacred elements?! This type of behavior really makes me want to watch NFL instead but I digress.

The B1G/ACC alliance seems like a good idea to me if it keeps the conference together. I'd be fine having some deal where the BTN has access to our markets as long as we can create and run an equivalent in theirs. It sounds like ESPN bought the entire sports suite though so I am not sure how that would work.

I'd also like to throw out the possibility that Swofford invite PSU. We can't offer them quite as much money as Delaney but we can offer them stability, natural rivals (no more of this PSU-Nebraska garbage), academics and better recruiting territory. We'd also be able to give them revenge on a conference that has never really had their back. Yes, it is a disgraced program right now but think about how much it would piss off Delaney. This whole Rutgers/UMD expansion really uses PSU as the trojan horse. Without them, Rutgers/UMD are on an island.

Great blog for the ACC! Here's to staying together!Brandonnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7193007137551439191.post-30438452161331460562012-11-20T19:37:23.246-05:002012-11-20T19:37:23.246-05:00Just a note, in case there are any more temptation...Just a note, in case there are any more temptations: trolling comments by people without the guts to leave a name will be removed. UVA/UNC to B1G seems to be speculated upon). The thing is, I don't see why B1G would make this move anytime soon. They are at 14 with two spots left. Do they really forget about Notre Dame, or do they try to wait Notre Dame out? As unhappy as Notre Dame/B1G were with each other, that's still a more logical landing spot than the Big 12 or SEC for Notre Dame. And if things trend to super-conferences, Notre Dame will have a horrific time with scheduling if they aren't in one.

If there is a 2nd move (besides the ACC plucking a team to compensate and the potential for BYU/Boise State/San Diego State to head back to the MWC), I think all eyes are on the Big 12. Do they try to pry Florida State and either Clemson or Georgia Tech away, to get to 12.

That said, everyone's going to wait on the MD negotiations first on the exit fee.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7193007137551439191.post-20333757180764000502012-11-20T14:35:43.938-05:002012-11-20T14:35:43.938-05:00How many minutes/hours/days until UVA and BC to th...How many minutes/hours/days until UVA and BC to the B1G pop up?Simonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09360191406192489235noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7193007137551439191.post-58656053966280518392012-11-20T13:07:04.019-05:002012-11-20T13:07:04.019-05:00you underestimate the value of Illinois to the Big...you underestimate the value of Illinois to the Big 10. UConn has unapologetically had a rogue basketball program for years with a graduation rate as bad as any college in the country. Louisville is an overgrown community college. And I don't even know where USF is. Where do we go from here? Maybe the ACC just swallows its pride and marries one of the ugly sisters.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7193007137551439191.post-1864234614357307942012-11-20T09:42:38.199-05:002012-11-20T09:42:38.199-05:00Clemson fan here.

I hated Maryland with a passion before this, and now hate them even more for the ineptitude with which they have run their department and thus screwed the ACC. The ACC with UConn instead of Maryland is fine with me, but I just don't see any configuration holding together for very long. It is such a minor change in terms of the quality of the league, and yet it has such an outsized impact on how I feel about the ACC. I now feel like we should get ours while the getting is good, because it's only a matter of time until the league gets torn apart. I'm a huge UVA baseball fan and would hate to see us leave a league that has FSU, Miami, UNC, GaTech, Clemson (Leggett you suck!) and NC State, but I figure half or more of those teams will be gone in the next few years anyways. Maybe we drag UNC with us to the Big 10 or somehow convince the SEC to let us join their club. In any case, I no longer care. Just look out for our own interests and make the best deal. It makes me so sad to type those words.CMUHoonoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7193007137551439191.post-73424479487294595472012-11-20T00:35:26.265-05:002012-11-20T00:35:26.265-05:00The whole thing is a disaster. Par...You broach an idea that I had been pondering. Part of the Big 10's motivation to expand was because their Pac-12 partnership failed. With the Big 10 and ACC already involved in one long partnership (basketball), one wonders if they could create some sort of secondary partnership that ensures ACC stability, expands the BTN reach, and gets the ACC more revenue. For example, scheduling X number of football games for each team each year.

One thing is certain - the ACC needs to hold firm on 50 million. MD is the one school that absolutely didn't have the money ... and yet it does for something like this, if Kevin Plank is willing to fork it over. Not many schools have a Kevin Plank ready to offer them an out, though.

I'm conflicted on the 4 options presented as replacements right now. UConn makes the most sense, but is it really needed? It's not like UConn really sways the NY or Boston markets tremendously. Louisville is probably the most complete athletic program, and a better geographical fit, but I'm not sure if it's an institutional fit. South Florida absolutely makes zero sense, but the fact that they are in it makes me wonder if FSU would like to see South Florida added. If it takes that to appease FSU in the short term, while Swofford gets his ducks in order, then okay. I actually wouldn't mind Cincinnati (I think that's the 4th), but I have high doubts they really get considered.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7193007137551439191.post-45821040779021823732012-11-19T23:03:44.051-05:002012-11-19T23:03:44.051-05:00Completely agree with most of this article.
