senior seasons

Normally part of the weekend review, but then you wouldn't have gotten your post til like one in the morning.  So it's today's post instead.  Here's a recap of the performances of our senior commitments in this past weekend's games.

Gilman 13, Don Bosco 6: Bosco was on a 46-game winning streak before this one.  Gilman finishes a very, very tough three-game stretch to open the season at 1-2, and Micah Kiser had 9.5 tackles and scored a tying touchdown on an interception return.

Good Counsel 14, St. Joseph's (NJ) 10: Kirk Garner also had a pick, and blocked a kick for good measure, and Brendan Marshall threw a 94-yard touchdown to future Hokie Kendall Fuller (though I suspect most of the work was done by Fuller.)  OLGC is 2-1.

Damascus 35, Watkins Mill 0: Zach Bradshaw caught two passes for 61 yards and a touchdown in the rout.  Damascus is 2-0.

South Iredell 41, North Iredell 10: Not so much to let you know how LaChaston Smith did during the game, since he's still got that broken leg, but there is good news there: the cast is off and Smith has graduated up to a walking boot.  South Iredell is 3-1.

Ocean Lakes 28, Cox 14: Off day for Corwin Cutler at 5-for-12 for 128 yards and a touchdown, but the Dolphins are still undefeated at 3-0.

Bayside 27, Green Run 14: Taquan Mizzell took care of everything, with 179 yards and two touchdowns on 25 carries, plus a 35-yard receiving touchdown, plus a 98-yard kickoff return on the opening kick.  Bayside is 3-1, and the big battle against Ocean Lakes is next week.

Oscar Smith 56, Great Bridge 0: Zack Jones caught two big touchdowns of 55 and 76 yards, and Oscar Smith is 1-1.

Brockton 21, BC High 0 (Jack McDonald) - BC High is 0-1.
St. John Vianney 40, Monsignor Donovan 0 (Brad Henson) - Donovan is 0-1.
Porter Ridge 41, A.L. Brown 14 (Keeon Johnson) - Brown is 3-1.
Fort Bend Clements 41, Houston Westside 35 (Hipolito Corporan) - Westside is 1-1.
St. Stephen's & St. Agnes 14, St. Christopher's 12 (Jack English) - St. Chris is 1-1.
Varina 14, Dinwiddie 7 (Tim Harris) - Varina is 1-0.
Fork Union 28, Goochland 10 (Malcolm Cook) - FUMA is 2-1.

-- A nice story here this weekend: Lacrosse players at Notre Dame Prep in Maryland will play their future games at Yeardley Love Field; her family spent the last few years raising money to donate in her name to her alma mater.

-- I usually leave this stuff to the experts, and I usually don't even bother looking at any recruiting except for the current season, but the list of big names who were in attendance at the Penn State game is too good to pass up.  If the idea of landing a superstar like Smoke Mizzell got your heart rate up in a good way, you'll love the potential of the 2014 class.  When the 2014 recruiting board is unveiled in January, it's very likely Quin Blanding, Andrew Brown, Jamil Kamara, and Derrick Nnadi will all make their debuts in blue.

-- Excited for tomorrow?  No?  You might be when I tell you that it'll mark the return of football highlights.  I'll finish cutting up the Penn State game tomorrow and have it up in the library the same day.  Future games promise to be even faster now that I've finally got my setup back in place.

-- Don't forget I write stuff for InsideTheACC, and here is this week's article on the recruiting overlap between UVA and Penn State.  PSU is probably about to lose 98% of their out-of-state clout, so I wonder how much that'll continue, but for right now, it's still spotlight-worthy.

Well, big news Brendan. Guess you've got a post to write up at some point about Notre Dame.

For me, the bigger takeaway is that Swofford has protected the ACC. That's bigger than ND joining, IMO. The fact that the exit fee is now one-third of the operating budget makes it seem unlikely that any school is bolting anytime soon.

Swofford needed this first step. The next step is to find a way to convince ND to join full-time. It's going to take a creative way to bridge the gap.

A thought:

Could the ACC go to 16 and go to a Championship Game format where only division record matters? Thus, 7 games. That would mean two more games than the 5 that ND is currently scheduled at.

If they agree to something like that, then when the Notre Dame NBC contract is up, the ACC could line up a 16th (either another Northeastern school, as Notre Dame seems to value that footprint, or a "traveling partner" for ND, someone a bit closer (only school I can come up with is Louisville, though).

Of course, there's a lot of other problems. It's not hard to envision ND wanting to keep it's "nonconference package" to sell on it's own (but ... perhaps they can make more money overall by grabbing a piece of the ACC pie and the noncon package). Some ACC schools wouldn't get to play ND on a regular basis anymore.

There's some other issues, BUT if the difference is two games, and the money is better ... would ND turn it down? This would be an ideal scenario for the ACC - able to renegotiate now ... and again in the future.
